The School of Agricultural Sciences was established in 1971 at the Great East Road Campus of the University of Zambia in Lusaka.

The School offers five undergraduate programmes of five-year duration leading to the degree of Bachelor of Agricultural Sciences. These include: Agricultural Economics and extension, Animal Science, Crop Science, Land management and Food Science and Technology.  The School also offers two Master of Science programmes of a two-year duration in Agronomy (with the option to specialise in either Crop Science of Soil Science) and in Animal Science. The Crop Science option has been developed into a SADC regional MSc programme, training students from the SADC region.

In-Service Training

In 1990, the School of Agricultural Sciences was given the mandate by the University of Zambia to offer in-service training courses. This endeavour is intended to extend agricultural education beyond the confines of academic training which hitherto has been the main mandate of the School.

People who went through formal education a long time ago are now being offered the opportunity to improve their knowledge and practical skills in their areas of specialization. The most effective means of imparting these new innovations is through in-service training.

Target beneficiaries are extension and research personnel, farm managers, land use planners, farmers and people in allied fields. The main objective of the courses is to update the participants with new developments in their disciplines and improve their practical skills. The courses also offer the teaching staff a rare opportunity to share experiences with people who are practising agriculturalists. This interaction is broadening the experience of the academic staff and helping adaptation of teaching to practical realities.
